Lucius Publicius, from Teretina in Italy, served 20-25 years with the Fifth Legion of the Roman Army. Upon his retirement, he would have received the equivalent of 13 years' salary to buy a farm or start a business, and he may even have paid for this memorial. His monument depicts him not as a soldier but as a Roman citizen, settled in Germany.
